It has happened to all of us sooner or later (as Max Pezzali also sang): our dear Xbox 360 and PS3 have abandoned us so suddenly, killed by a red (Xbox 360) or yellow (PS3) LED. Anger, desperation, then the flash of genius: we search the web for a do-it-yourself solution instead of contacting official Microsoft or Sony support!
Premise: in the era of PS3 and Xbox 360 the web was certainly not as we know it today and therefore we often relied on word of mouth on specialized forums, where the supposed technician on duty invited us to perform a series of operations to solve the most disparate problems. Reliability? Often close to zero, with the risk of doing even more damage.
That said, today we know that the problem of the red LEDs on Xbox 360 (RROD) was a drama for many players while the yellow LED on PS3 (YLOD) occurred less frequently and almost only on older consoles. In both cases the problems were often related to the motherboard, the thermal paste used for soldering or other components assembled not exactly state of the art.
Usually when our console started dying, the most popular solution of the “forum technician” was to suggest a nice night in the cool. No, nothing illegal and no night spent in a cell, it was simply recommended to wrap the console in a cloth or towel and put it to rest in the refrigerator or freezer.
There are those who actually did it but no, this method did not really work, at least not in the long run. Yes, it was useful to cool the console and the hottest components but it did not go much further, in fact, often after being in the fridge and returning to work (yay), after a few hours the console would die definitively.
It’s the same principle as the wet smartphone: If your iPhone ends up in the sea, putting it to dry in a bowl full of rice grains won’t do any good.although this method can help dry out your phone a bit by removing water and moisture.
How many of you put your console in the fridge after the evil LEDs appeared? Be honest and confide in us below in the comments section!
