It’s no longer a secret that cult director Zack Snyder is not only a great visionary, but also overshoots the mark with some of his projects. The best example of this is the two-part science fiction epic Rebel Moon, which was often heralded in advance as a “Star Wars killer” or “Star Wars for adults”. However, both films turned out to be major flops, and even the subsequent director’s cut couldn’t really change that. Was it perhaps one failure too many in the end? In any case, Netflix has pulled the plug.
Which films is Zack Snyder known for?
Over the past few decades, Zack Snyder has tried his hand at various genres and has made a name for himself in Hollywood, particularly through his own unique style. His greatest successes are probably the visually stunning battle epic 300 and the zombie film Dawn of the Dead.
He also worked in the DC superhero universe for a few years and brought both Man of Steel and Justice League (at least in part) to the big screen. The Netflix production Army of the Dead, on the other hand, was not as well received, but was supposed to serve as the foundation for a number of zombie projects. However, that is probably not going to happen.
Does Army of the Dead have a future?
The zombie film Army of the Dead boasted Hollywood stars like Dave Bautista, but failed to impress both critics and viewers. Nevertheless, it was only the first of a whole series of spin-offs: an animated series and several films were planned, among others. A sequel called Army of Thieves, in which German star Matthias Schweighöfer played the lead role, made its debut on Netflix three years ago. There has been very little news about the other projects.

There seems to be a good reason for this: According to a recent report from The Wrap magazine, Netflix has pulled the emergency brake on the zombie franchise. The planned animation series was put on ice some time ago, and plans for further films have now disappeared into the drawers. Fans should therefore probably bury their hopes for further zombie adventures from Zack Snyder (for now).
