User reviews were introduced to Steam to give potential buyers an idea of the product, but instead of useful feedback, players often leave jokes, memes, and other meaningless materials. Apparently, Valve has found a way to combat this.
Reddit forum members drew attentionthat in addition to the usual review filters (“Topical”, “Funny”, “Useful”, “Recent”), the “Use the new helpfulness system” function has recently appeared among the items in the “Display” submenu in Steam.
The filter is applied only to relevant and useful reviews. The “usefulness” system (it is activated by default) allowed the user to hide all humorous and/or provocative reviews of Counter-Strike 2 on Steam, leaving only opinions about the game itself for review.
Apparently, the “new usefulness system” was available ahead of schedule: the “Learn more” button led to a non-existent post on the Valve blog. The feature has now been disabled, likely to be fully released to the public in the foreseeable future.
The helpfulness system for user reviews is not the only innovation awaiting Steam. The clip recording function is currently undergoing open beta testing – it is available through the Steam overlay in all games and hardly loads the system. The announcement was made at the end of June.
