After all, many people worked hard on it: One of the people responsible for the Borderlands film, which is increasingly turning into a disaster, is begging you to at least give the film a chance in the cinema.
Borderlands turns into a disaster at the cinema
Actually, you could have guessed it: After the film adaptation of the video game Borderlands was first mentioned in 2015, there was silence about the film until 2020. Then it was announced again – this time officially. Eli Roth (Hostel, Thanksgiving) took the director’s chair and filming was completed by mid-2021.
Nevertheless, it took more than three years before the film finally premiered. And it wasn’t exactly a success: critics have been tearing the video game adaptation to pieces, and the film debuted on the review platform Rotten Tomatoes with 0% positive reviews. So it’s completely understandable that most fans of the series aren’t interested in the film. Nevertheless, the CEO of Take Two, the publisher of Borderlands (buy now for €34.99), is now begging you: Please give the film a chance!
Is Borderlands really that bad?
Looking at the cast, it’s almost surprising that Borderlands is currently getting such a bad reception: Not only are Hollywood stars like Cate Blanchett (Lord of the Rings), Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) and Kevin Hart (Jumanji) coming together for the film. Jack Black, who we’ve known since last year as the voice of Super Mario, will also be heard as the voice of Claptrap.
Nevertheless, the film failed to convince the critics. Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has now also spoken out about the poor reviews. While he described the style of the film as “great,” he also urged fans to at least give Borderlands a chance in the cinema.
According to IGN, he even defended the film: “The underlying franchise is phenomenal, the cast is great, I think the look and feel is really great. Let’s see what the audience has to say.”
Does the failure of Borderlands now also affect GTA 6?
At the same time, Zelnick was also asked whether the impending failure of Borderlands would have a financial impact on Take Two’s business. In addition to Borderlands, the publisher also owns huge brands such as GTA 6 and Civilization 7. Could a possible flop of the Borderlands film also have an impact on these games?

The CEO’s clear answer: “No, the performance of the film has no financial impact on us or the franchise.” So neither GTA 6 nor any other brand will be affected by Borderlands. Especially since it is not yet certain whether the video game adaptation will even be such a big box office flop.
When does Borderlands launch in Germany?
Because at least the film is at the top of the bestseller list on Amazon. We don’t have to wait too long for the story about Lillith, Tiny Tina and Claptrap in the cinema either. Borderlands will be released in German cinemas on August 22nd, 2024. We will see then at the latest whether the negative reviews will jeopardize the success of the film. But what about you: Will you go to the cinema or are you not interested in Borderlands at all?
