Bethesda released updated versions of DOOM and DOOM II at QuakeCon this week. The games were ported to the KEX Engine, updated with more modern graphics, and on consoles, players were able to play in 4K at 120 FPS. However, the Xbox One X has trouble playing the game at maximum resolution.
Benchmarks have emerged that show how the new versions of DOOM and DOOM II perform on Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S:
Xbox One – 1080p at 60 FPS with occasional drops of 1-2 frames. Xbox One X – 4K at 60 FPS with regular drops to 45-50 FPS. Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S – 4K at 120 FPS (60 FPS) without performance issues.
The Xbox One X version seems to have the most trouble in terms of running the updated DOOM and DOOM II. At 4K resolution, the frame rate barely holds at 60 FPS, and regularly drops below 45 FPS.
You can lower the resolution in the settings on the Xbox One X to achieve a more stable frame rate. Below is a test of the new versions of DOOM running on a powerful last-gen Xbox.
As a reminder, the new versions of DOOM and DOOM II are available on Game Pass. In addition to graphical improvements, the games have been updated with a large amount of content.
