You would actually think that Formula 1 is the leader in the racing game genre. Of course, the Codemasters series is criticized from time to time. Especially since the return of the F1 games to the EA Sports universe, the skepticism of the fan community has increased, and controversial titles like F1 24 do not necessarily help in this context.
At the same time, Formula 1 remains the world’s most popular motorsport series. But a look at Steam reveals that it is not the latest title for the single-seater world championship that is at the top of the podium. Instead, it is a modern classic of the racing game genre with perhaps its last hype.
When was Forza Horizon 4 released?
Forza Horizon 4 was officially launched on PC and Xbox on September 28, 2018. The open-world racing game quickly received a lot of praise, including from our editorial team. To this day, many fans want to continue playing the fourth part of the series on the PC.
In the future, however, this could be a problem. It was announced that Forza Horizon 4 would disappear from online stores on December 15th. As soon as the announcement was made, sales of the racing game on Steam shot through the roof again.
This is exactly what was observed in the Steam charts. Some statistics indicate that Forza Horizon 4 was by far the most popular racing game on the platform in July. The website Overtake.gg has summarized the figures.

New No. 1 racing game on Steam
On average, over 21,000 people played Forza Horizon 4 on Steam at the same time. While the figure currently ranges between 4,000 and 17,000, the figure temporarily exceeded 70,000 around the time of the announcement and in the days following.
For comparison: On Steam, a maximum of around 5,000 people played F1 24 at the same time. Forza is not the only one that is far ahead of the Formula 1 title. Games like BeamNG.Drive, Forza Horizon 5, Assetto Corsa and Need for Speed Heat also boasted better numbers in July.
