Take-Two CEO Wants People to Give Borderlands Movie a Chance
Speaking with IGN, Strauss Zelnick was asked whether the success or failure of the Borderlands movie would significantly impact Take-Two Interactive.
“Let’s give this movie a chance,” Zelnick said. “A lot of people worked hard on this movie. The underlying IP is phenomenal, the cast is incredible, I think the look and feel of it is really great.”
Zelnick added, “So we’ll see what the audience says. But to answer your question, no, the performance of this film will not have a financial impact on us or on the franchise in any way.”
Zelnick was then asked about his thoughts on video game film adaptations in general, to which he replied that Take-Two Interactive is “very selective” about which games they turn into films.
However, Zelnick added that the economic impact of licensing game IP into a film is small, so there’s no reason to do it unless the creative team involved is passionate. “That’s not the point for us,” Zelnick stressed.
Zelnick went on to predict that 2K will “probably maintain” its approach of only selectively doing film and TV adaptations going forward.
At the time of writing, 92 critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given the Borderlands film an overall score of 10%. Meanwhile, the overall audience score for the film is 51%.
In November 2023, Zelnick revealed that he refused to adapt Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption into film and TV because it was a “very risky move.”
