Things have been anything but smooth in the games industry in recent months. The numerous reports of the closure of traditional development studios have shocked not only the employees directly affected, but also the fans. The German team at Piranha Bytes was not the only one to have to throw in the towel. In May, Microsoft cut costs at four studios at once, including Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within) and Arkane Austin (Prey). Now, to the horror of the community, the next game developer is being hit.
Not only God of War, but many other highlights
In 2003, Andrea Pessino and Ru Weerasuriya, among others, founded the development studio Ready at Dawn, based in Irvine, California. In the early days, the team consisted largely of former employees of Blizzard Entertainment (World of Warcraft) and Naughty Dog Productions (The Last of Us). The studio was not only responsible for action highlights such as God of War: Ghost of Sparta and God of War: Chains of Olympus, but also brought games such as Daxter and The Order: 1886 to market in close cooperation with Sony.
Four years ago, Ready at Dawn was acquired by the Facebook company Meta and has been operating under its banner since that day. The two VR games Echo Combat and Lone Echo 2 were created during this period. Unfortunately, no further titles will follow, as the studio’s demise is sealed.
The next traditional studio has been hit
According to current reports, Meta has closed the development studio Ready at Dawn with effect from August 7, 2024, i.e. last Wednesday. The exact reasons for this decision are not yet known. However, the affected employees will be given the opportunity to apply to other teams at Oculus Studios.

The studio closure may be related to the 20 percent budget cuts for the company’s Reality Labs division that Meta announced a few weeks ago.
