After sharing some interesting thoughts on the theoretical power and performance of the PS5 Pro, the Digital Foundry team looks to the modding scene of FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games to praise the work done by the authors of Lighting Engine, one of the most ambitious mods for Dark Souls 2.
The well-known collective of tech enthusiast journalists linked to Eurogamer.net dedicates an entire in-depth video to the developers of this fan-made expansion that promises to overturn and update the graphics of the second chapter of the Dark Souls series.
The ambitious Lighting Engine project integrates a series of graphic updates that affect every aspect of DS2’s technical department, introducing for example a more advanced system in the management of volumetric fog and environmental shadows, more realistic lighting and an advanced Ambient Occlusion system that helps give depth to every single region of the Drangleic kingdom.
The modders even took care to introduce support for NVIDIA DLAA and the AMD FSR upscaling system, a work so complex and profound that it pushed the journalists of Digital Foundry to consider this mod as the ‘perfect unofficial Remaster’ (as well as free) for those who want to immerse themselves once again in the action role-playing experience of Dark Souls 2.
