The actors who voiced the characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 only recorded animations for cutscenes: when it came to combat, other specialists were called into the mocap studio. One of them was stuntman Mustafa El Bahri.
It was Mustafa and his team who swung plastic swords and ran around in suits with sensors so that the characters of Baldur’s Gate 3 could swing and hit their opponents. In this short video, Mustafa shows how it was done.
Each hero in Baldur’s Gate 3 has a recognizable fighting style. It was the choreographers and stuntmen who came up with ways to add zest to the game’s characters’ movements – even when using the same weapon, different heroes will move differently.
An interesting point: it seems that the stuntmen worked on the characters without regard to gender. For example, it was Mustafa who recorded the animations for the githyanka La’ezel’s movements; perhaps this is due to the girl’s general sternness.
