James Wan is in talks to direct a Creature from the Black Lagoon remake for Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures, Deadline has learned. Wan is developing a grounded, modern retelling that pays homage to the classic original.
Creature from the Black Lagoon has been a priority for Universal since the studio overhauled its monster movie strategy in 2019. Given Wan’s horror pedigree, which includes the hit Saw and Conjuring franchises, the film is a natural fit for him.
Wan will produce the film under the Atomic Monster banner, with Michael Clear and Judson Scott serving as executive producers. Universal’s vice president of production development Jay Polidoro will oversee the film.
