The upcoming movie Alien: Romulus contains a telephone Easter egg alluding to Alien: Isolation.
The horror film Alien: Romulus will be released in German cinemas on August 15th. Director Fede Álvarez revealed in an interview with the Inside Total Film Podcast that the seventh main installment in the Alien series also contains an Easter egg alluding to Alien: Isolation and what role the horror game released in 2014 played in the creation of the film.
Alvarez says he always got nervous when he saw a phone while playing Alien: Isolation. These serve as a save point, but often indicate dangerous events that are about to happen.
A detail that the director made his own for Alien: Romulus via an Easter Egg. One of the aforementioned phones can be seen before certain spooky scenes:
“The film is structured in such a way that every time something bad is about to happen, you see a telephone.”
“In the game, every time you knew there was a phone, you thought, ‘Shit, I’m about to get into a bad scene.’ It’s the same here.”
“You’ll see them strategically placed throughout the film. When you see the phone, it means you’re in for something.”
Alvarez also explains that Alien: Isolation gave him the opportunity to make Alien scary even in modern times and gave him the motivation to tackle an Alien project himself:
“Alien: Isolation showed me that Alien can be really scary and well done.”
“I played it a few years after the movie came out. Don’t Breathe had just come out. Or I was waiting for Don’t Breathe to come out and I played the game.”
“So at the time I thought, ‘Damn, if I could do anything, I’d love to do Alien and scare the audience again with that creature and those environments.’ I played and realized how scary Alien can be when you revisit it that way.”
