After releasing on PS5 over a year ago, Square Enix is gearing up to release Final Fantasy 16 on the Epic Games Store and Steam. But will the day ever come when the mainline JRPG series games will hit PC on day one?
Speaking to GamesRadar+, Hiroshi Takai discussed the decision to release the PC version of Final Fantasy 16 over a year after the PS5 version, and whether it’s something we’ll see happen again in the future. When asked if future Final Fantasy games could launch day one on Steam and other PC stores, Takai said, “I think it’s possible, maybe even likely. That said, the team in charge of each project can decide their own policy, so this is just my personal opinion.”
While these statements are in fact part of Takai’s personal opinion, they are in line with what Square Enix has stated in various financial briefings over the past year. The publisher had in fact spoken of a “shift from quantity to quality” and the desire to “aggressively pursue a multi-platform strategy”.
With the gap between Final Fantasy 16’s PS5 and PC releases stretching over a year, Takai was asked if the team was worried about PC players’ interest in the title fading. “Of course, we wanted to get the PC version into the hands of players as quickly as possible,” Takai replied. “We don’t gain anything by delaying the release. That said, I don’t think we could have done much more to speed up the porting process. Looking at the results, I think the time we spent optimizing the game for PC was well spent.”
In addition to PC, it looks like Final Fantasy 16 has a chance of coming to Xbox as well.
