Obsidian Studios recently postponed the release of Avowed to February 18, 2025. However, the delay is not due to development issues, but to the large number of games and major DLCs planned by Microsoft Gaming for this year. Avowed was decided to be postponed to early 2025, but journalists were given the opportunity to try the game at Gamescom. Judging by the first previews, the impressions of the project are positive.
Journalists who played Avowed were impressed by the graphics, but noted that the art style sometimes seemed like a “strange mix.” Here’s what the publication wrote about it Eurogamer in his preview:
Visually, Avowed is impressive, but the art style can sometimes feel like a strange mix. The dungeon I explored was bright and colorful, like video game caves, but it – like everything else I’ve seen in Avowed so far – feels like a bit of a fantasy mash-up: Skyrim meets Lord of the Rings with a brighter color palette, with a dash of James Cameron’s Avatar thrown in.
All early previews note that Avowed has a recognizable Obsidian feel from a role-playing perspective. The game offers a wide variety of dialogue options, which can have a significant impact on the events that take place. Players can also kill NPCs, but Obsidian has noted that they intentionally avoided the ability to “kill most of the characters,” meaning there are still some limitations.
The locations are also made in the style of other Obsidian projects. Players can get to the desired point by different routes, encountering various obstacles along the way. Quite large game areas are given for exploration, which contain many secrets, but this is not a full-fledged open world. The structure of the game world of Avowed is similar to The Outer Worlds.
The combat system in Avowed is moderately complex, requiring players to tailor their tactics to the specific battle. Edition IGN in his preview he writes that you need to skillfully combine the abilities of companions and your own skills. The main character will be able to carry 2 sets of weapons, which are switched with one button, which also adds variety to the combat system.
As a reminder, Avowed is only planned for release on Xbox Series X | S and PC, plus Game Pass.
