With “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”, the indie developers at Sandfall Interactive are creating a role-playing game that combines a triple-A budget with classic turn-based combat. The newly released gameplay video shows what it all looks like in practice.
In June, the French indie studio Sandfall Interactive announced its latest project, “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”. A turn-based role-playing game awaits us that transports us to a world inspired by “La Bella Epoque” (in English: “The Beautiful Epoch”).
The developers at Sandfall Interactive also promise a role-playing game with a classic turn-based combat system. A recently released gameplay video for “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” lasts six minutes and presents us with the game world as well as the RPG’s combat system.
As the scenes presented make clear, Sandfall Interactive was inspired by various well-known classics such as “Paper Mario”, “Final Fantasy” and “Persona” when designing the combat system. But just see for yourself.
Break the death cycle of a painter
The plot of “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” loosely takes up a period of French history that was known for its art. As the name of the RPG suggests, we take control of the participants of an expedition.
They are faced with the seemingly impossible task of breaking the mysterious cycle of death of a painter. As the players explore the world inspired by French art and cultural history, they are confronted with all kinds of enemies and conflicts, as is typical for RPGs.
The battles in “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” are turn-based. To ensure that the battles remain interesting in the long term, they offer various interactive elements.
Provided you have the right timing, you can use the actions to cause greater damage or fend off enemy attacks.
Developers promise a journey through breathtaking landscapes
In addition to the turn-based combat system, the game world is said to be one of the greatest strengths of the role-playing game. According to the developers, we explore a picturesque world with numerous secrets.
Fans of exciting and emotional stories will also get their money’s worth in “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”.
“You have only one year to live and accompany Gustave, Maelle and their fellow explorers on their desperate journey to break the painter’s death cycle. Follow the footsteps of previous expeditions and discover their fate. Get to know the members of Expedition 33 as they try to survive the impossible together,” it continues.
“Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” will be released in 2025 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Sandfall Interactive has not yet given a concrete date.
