When the gaming industry was still in its early stages of becoming a mainstream entertainment industry, “mascots” did play a very important role for a variety of different purposes. They could be the spearhead to attract more people through the design and personality of the character to popularize the platform or company. For gamers? They could be a symbol of quality where series involving the mascot usually come as interesting games to try. For Playstation, the status of which character becomes a mascot does vary from one generation to another. For Playstation 4 and Playstation 5? That responsibility must be acknowledged, handed over to the cute robots concocted by Team Asobi – Astro Bot.
Being the spearhead of Sony from the Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 eras, Astro Bot’s role unfortunately has to be admittedly very limited. At that point, it was only designed as a super limited experience to showcase the various technologies owned by Sony at that time, both for Playstation VR and DualSense in the Playstation 5 era. A situation like this is of course disappointing and sad at the same time, where Sony seems to limit not only Team Asobi’s creative energy but also Astro Bot’s potential to grow and develop bigger, wider, more complex, and finally – become a platformer game that it should be. The good news? This last matter was finally fulfilled by Sony through a full game that they simply titled – Astro Bot.
So, what exactly does Astro Bot offer? Why do we call it the best Playstation platformer game so far? This review will dive deeper into it for you.
Plot
Coming back with a simple plot, you again play as Astro here.
Like the previous two games that came with a super simple story, this Astro Bot-filled game also comes with a similar style. You will play as the main protagonist bot named Astro who must face a new disaster. The Playstation 5 which is their main ship ends up being damaged and its main components stolen, making it useless. Not only that, the hundreds of ship passenger bots are now scattered across many planets and worlds.
So as you might expect, it’s your job as Astro to find and rescue these scattered bots while securing these essential Playstation 5 components. Unfortunately, the complexity of this last one is increased. These components end up being guarded by giant, large monsters for each planetary system. Of course, to be able to open the planet where they live, you need a number of bots that you have previously rescued.
One of the antagonists’ pranks causes your Playstation 5 ship to be damaged with components and bots scattered around. That’s right, it’s your job to find the bots while repairing your Playstation 5.
What’s interesting? It turns out that these giant monsters are not only suspected of storing important components of your Playstation 5 plane, but also important bot members in the Astro Bot universe itself.
So, what kind of challenges must Astro go through? Who are the bot characters waiting for you at the end of each planetary system? Can you rebuild your Playstation 5 ship? All the answers to these questions can be obtained by playing this Astro Bot.
