Shortly before tomorrow’s release, the international reviews for “Astro Bot” arrived today. We’ll tell you how Team Asobi’s charming platformer fared with the critics and why you shouldn’t miss the PS5 exclusive title.
Tomorrow, Friday, September 6, 2024, “Astro Bot,” the latest project from Japanese developer studio Team Asobi, will be released exclusively for the PS5.
While Team Asobi has so far mainly tried smaller projects, “Astro Bot” is a full-fledged 3D platformer that is intended to score points with its approximately 80 varied levels as well as its entertaining power-ups.
As the reviews from the international gaming press that arrived today make clear, this venture was definitely a success. Not only did “Astro Bot” score an impressive 9.5/10 points in our detailed test, but our international colleagues are also enthusiastic.
One of the best platformers of recent years
Auf Metacritic After more than 70 reviews, “Astro Bot” has an average rating of 94 points. The platformer’s strengths include the charming and varied worlds, the intelligent use of power-ups, the harmonious integration of the DualSense features and the atmospheric soundtrack.
Furthermore, critics highlight the fact that “Astro Bot” is a title that focuses on what makes the medium of video games so special: the fun of playing.
The few points of criticism include the not always perfect camera and the fact that we should not expect any innovations in the area of platforming elements themselves.
This is what our international colleagues say
The boys and girls from Comicbook awarded the highest rating of five out of five stars. The editor’s conclusion states that “Astro Bot” even exceeded the high expectations: “Although I had high expectations for Astro Bot, Team Asobi still managed to exceed all my hopes. This is not only one of the best games of 2024, but also one of the best platform games I’ve played in the last decade.”
Also five out of five stars and the following conclusion can be found at Gameshub: “This game was designed with purity at its heart. It’s truly the sweetest product placement you’ll ever see. While it’s a celebration of the PlayStation brand and a pat on the back for years of good business, it feels well-earned.”
“It’s a nod to the many adventures PlayStation has created and supported, and a wonderful tribute to decades of positive memories.”
Another top rating was VGC: “Astro Bot isn’t just a fun platformer with a nostalgic twist. It’s a cross-generational, impressive entry in the genre that understands PlayStation at an atomic level.”
“The sheer fun the game generates makes it impossible to compare it to anything other than Mario’s very best adventure. Astro is no longer a vector through which PlayStation icons are referenced. He is a PlayStation icon.
90 out of 100 points awarded Gaming Trend. The conclusion is as follows: “Astro Bot has all the strengths of a brand new puppy. He’s cute, playful, and loyal to PlayStation history. While he still has room to grow into his legs and sharpen his teeth, most missteps will be easily forgiven. I mean, just look at him!”
