With a bang, Gearbox unleashes the first trailer for Borderlands 4 at the start of the Gamescom Opening Night – and in doing so, sparks heated debates about the title. But what makes us so hungry for the studio’s next game?
Looting and leveling
Borderlands built its success primarily through a new combination of unique elements: the co-op PvE factor, the (sometimes more, sometimes less) charming NPCs and absurd quests that effortlessly draw us into the world of Pandora.
With Borderlands, Gearbox made the term looter shooter socially acceptable back in 2009, and the developers have shown their understanding of the effort-reward model in every part of the series so far. Looting just feels good on Pandora, regardless of whether you find a legendary weapon or a single lump of Eridium.
The crown jewel of the gaming experience also comes from the reward system. If we blow up enough bandits, we get a skill point.

RPG – no, not the rocket launcher
With this skill point, you can now fill different skill trees, depending on the class you choose. For example, if we decided to play the crazy war at the beginning of Borderlands 2, we can now choose whether we want to cause an explosion on opponents using bloodlust effects, or whether we would rather increase our own damage using self-ignition.
Through the skill trees – and at a higher level also the choice of class – the first-person shooter can be adapted like an RPG to our own wishes, playing styles and power fantasies.
Of course, in other shooters we can also choose individual play styles using different weapons, but these are usually limited to the range. With the shotgun we throw ourselves into the middle of the action, with the sniper rifle we sit comfortably on the other side of the map.
Borderlands 4 – Never touch a running System?
Not much is known about the fourth installment in the series. However, a short trailer without text and vague hints from the developers at PAX West 2024 on August 31, 2024 already suggest that the story follows directly on from Borderlands 3, but new concept art brings a breath of fresh air to the world, which is probably not Pandora.

Rumor mill: This time with Star Wars and Borderlands 4
This week we will also visit the rumor mill with you, which has current topics from the gaming industry to offer.
Regarding the gameplay, Gearbox Creative Director Graeme Timmins explains that it is important to them to preserve the archetypes of the classes and to develop new gameplay approaches for us, rather than simply changing the designs. So we can look forward to four new Vault Hunters with individual skills, which we can probably turn into our perfect killing machines using skill trees.
