The influence of Game Science’s Black Myth; Wukong on the gaming industry for at least the past few weeks has been undeniable. For gamers who enjoy action RPG games, finding a classy, exciting game based on Chinese mythology is not something that is easy to find, which fortunately was also executed nicely by Game Science itself. Meanwhile, for developers and publishers, this has opened their eyes to the potential of the Chinese market, which so far has only seemed to revolve around discussions about gacha games. The dominance of the Chinese market is also felt on Valve’s digital platform – Steam.
Having recorded more than 2.4 million concurrent gamers on Steam, the presence of Chinese gamers who are reportedly the most dominant consumers for Black Myth: Wukong also affects the dynamics on Steam. Based on Steam survey data for August 2024, Chinese managed to beat English as the most widely used language by Steam users. No kidding, there was an increase of more than 3% there. This is not the first time this has happened considering that Chinese also dominated in February 2024, but with a difference of only around 0.7%.
Thanks to the success of Wukong, Chinese became the most dominant language on Steam for August 2024.
China itself still has several premium AAA games that are also planned to be released via Steam, including the latest action game concocted by S-Game – Phantom Blade Zero. Will the same dominance happen again when the game is released? Let’s just wait and see.
