Google has unveiled a number of new features, including the long-awaited tab grouping for Chrome for iOS, cross-platform tab group syncing between mobile and desktop versions of the browser, and an experimental feature to proactively suggest recently visited web pages. These improvements are designed to significantly improve user productivity and further strengthen Chrome’s position in the highly competitive web browser market.
This functionality, which has already become an integral part of the user experience on Android and desktop versions of the browser, is now available to iPhone and iPad owners. To organize related web pages into intuitive groups, you need to open the tab grid, press and hold the selected tab, and then select the option “Add tab to new group”. You can then give the group a unique name and choose a color for it. This will greatly simplify navigation and finding the information you need among many open tabs, which is especially important for active mobile users.
Along with the introduction of tab grouping on iOS, Google announced a feature to sync saved tab groups across multiple devices. This will help solve the age-old problem of losing context when switching between devices. Now users will be able to easily continue work started, for example, on a smartphone, when switching to a desktop computer without the risk of losing important tabs. According to Google, this update will appear in Chrome on iOS “soon.”
In addition, Chrome is testing an innovative feature that proactively suggests websites previously opened on other user devices, which will significantly reduce the need for bookmarks. Thus, when opening a new Chrome tab on any of the supported devices (Android, iOS or desktop), the user will be offered specific web pages to visit again. Google plans to begin testing this feature in a couple of weeks, but the exact date for its launch has not yet been announced.
