The virtual reality headset HoloLens is no longer produced by Microsoft and a successor does not seem to be in sight.
Production of HoloLens 2 headsets is discontinued. Microsoft told The Verge. According to Craig Cincotta, Cloud Communications General Manager, customers and partners have been informed about this.
Security updates will be available until the end of 2027.
Cincotta wrote in an email: “Microsoft is no longer making the Microsoft HoloLens 2, and we have signaled one last time to customers and partners that they can purchase it. Support for HoloLens 2, including security updates, will end on December 31, 2027.”
“We will continue to invest in mixed reality opportunities with first-party software solutions and services, and partner with the broader mobile phone and mixed reality hardware ecosystem. Additionally, we remain fully committed to the Department of Defense IVAS program.”
According to UploadVR, software support for the original HoloLens will end on December 10th.
Whether there will ever be a HoloLens 3 is anyone’s guess. Plans for this had already been scrapped in 2022 and Microsoft hinted at a “significant update” for the hardware when the time was right.
