A new contactless payment system will be launched in Russia, designed to become a full-fledged analogue of Apple Pay. It will provide users of Android and iOS devices with convenience and security of payment, eliminating dependence on foreign technologies and ecosystems.
Senior Vice President of Sberbank Dmitry Malykh emphasized that Bluetooth technology will be used to ensure communication between the mobile device and the bank terminal. Sber terminals have already been adapted to the new solution, which guarantees the prompt implementation of the new contactless payment system and minimizing the costs of modernizing the existing infrastructure.
As Vladislav Laptev, director of innovation at Fork-Tech, noted, the main advantage of payment via Bluetooth is the independence of the new solution from the Apple ecosystem, which is especially important in the context of international sanctions pressure. Unlike NFC, Bluetooth provides a wider range, allowing you to make payments over a distance. This flexibility opens up new application scenarios, including payment in complex environments where traditional methods are limited.
However, ensuring the security of Bluetooth payments remains a priority. Artyom Zhuravlev, Method product director at the fintech company Paygine, noted that encryption and tokenization technologies play a key role here. Establishing a secure connection between the user’s device and the bank terminal eliminates the possibility of unauthorized access, which increases user confidence in the domestic contactless payment system.
The Central Bank of Russia supports the implementation of such innovative solutions. The regulator’s press service emphasized that such projects help improve convenience for citizens and stimulate the development of the domestic fintech industry. Support from the Central Bank creates conditions for the widespread introduction of payment via Bluetooth, which, in turn, strengthens the national financial infrastructure and increases its competitiveness in the international arena.
