The WhatsApp administration announced the launch of a new feature – voice message decryption. It will be useful, for example, when the recipient is in a noisy place and cannot listen to such a message. It is important to note that this feature will be available to all users for free – in Telegram, voice message transcription is available only to paid users.
The voice message is decrypted locally on the user’s device, WhatsApp emphasized – no data is sent anywhere, and no one can read it. To start working with the new function, you need to enable the corresponding option in the “Chats” settings section and select the decryption language. After this, when you touch and hold a sent voice message for a long time, the “Transcribe” option will appear in the context menu—transcription is not performed in automatic mode.
In the coming weeks, WhatsApp will be rolling out the new feature in countries around the world whose languages are supported. On iOS 16, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese and Arabic are supported; on iOS 17 and later there are also Danish, Finnish, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, Hebrew and Thai. Android supports voice transcripts in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. Support for other languages will be available in the coming months.
