Canadian studio Digital Extremes has announced the launch of its sci-fi third-person shooter Dark Sector, which debuted in 2008, for free on Steam.
The action takes place in an alternative future in the Eastern European country of Lasria. The plot revolves around the Technocyte virus, the first outbreak of which occurred in Soviet times, and the second – shortly before the start of the game.
Players take on the role of American special agent Hayden Tenno and take on the task of eliminating a former CIA operative who caused a new Technocyte outbreak. During the operation, the hero himself becomes infected with the virus, which gives him new abilities.
At release, Dark Sector received mixed reviews from critics (on Metacritic it has 66-72%), but on Steam the game earned “very positive reviews” from users – 82% of the responses are positive.
The Dark Sector distribution on Steam will end on November 30 at 20:00 Moscow time. Although the game cannot be purchased in the domestic segment from the spring of 2022, the promotion is also available to users with Russian accounts.
The free giveaway is timed to coincide with the imminent (there is still no exact date) release of the free 1999 add-on to the online shooter Warframe – the next Digital Extremes game after Dark Sector.
Warframe: 1999 will take players to the European city of Helvania in 1999. One of the sources of inspiration for the addon was Dark Sector – early developments in the game formed the basis for Warframe.
