The Russian government has decided on a list of regions in which, as of December 1, the work of cryptocurrency miners, including participants in mining pools, may be prohibited. This follows from the materials of the government commission on the development of the electric power industry scheduled for November 18.
The draft protocol states that from December 1, 2024 to March 15, 2025, a ban on cryptocurrency mining will be introduced in some cities and districts of the Irkutsk region, Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory. In the future, the ban in the mentioned regions will be introduced annually during peak load periods from November 15 to March 15 until 2031 inclusive. “In the Karachay-Cherkess, Kabardino-Balkarian Republics, North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Dagestan, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, DPR and LPR, it is proposed to introduce a total ban from December 1, 2024 to March 15, 2031”the document says.
Over the past few years, the Ministry of Energy has been fighting large miners, which, according to the department, are exacerbating local electricity shortages. The main goal of the Ministry of Energy is to force miners to move to other regions where there is excess energy capacity. Deputy Minister of Energy Yevgeny Grabchak previously spoke about the upcoming ban on cryptocurrency mining in a number of regions of the country. “We already have deficit zones – the Far East, southwest Siberia, the south. We cannot provide large capacities to anyone there until 2030.”,” the source quotes the official as saying.
A representative of the government of Ingushetia said that a discussion on the topic of a ban on cryptocurrency mining in the region is planned with the federal center, but no documents regarding the ban have yet been received from Moscow. The government of Kabardino-Balkaria noted that the tightening in relation to mining should not affect the economy in the region, but at the same time it will help improve the quality of electricity supply. North Ossetia also reported that there have not yet been any specific instructions regarding the ban on mining. Representatives of other regions that may be affected by the ban on cryptocurrency mining have not yet commented on this issue.
