It has become known that the case of a programmer accused of creating a malicious program has been transferred to court in Kaliningrad. According to a RIA Novosti source, this may be the hacker Mikhail Matveev, known under the nicknames Wazawaka, Boriselcin and Uhodiransomwar, and who is wanted in the United States. The FBI is offering a $10 million reward for assistance in his capture.
In the US, Matveev is accused of being involved in extortion hacker groups such as Hive, LockBit and Babuk. He is suspected of involvement in a number of hacking attacks, including an attack that took down the systems of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department in April 2021. More than a year later, Matveev helped launch an attack using the Hive ransomware against a non-governmental healthcare organization in New Jersey, according to US law enforcement. At the end of 2022, the LockBit group infected the computer systems of 1,400 companies and facilities, including the Holiday Inn hotel in Turkey.
The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has sanctioned Matveev for his role in several ransomware attacks on U.S. services and critical infrastructure. According to the US Department of Justice, Matveev received more than $75 million as ransom from his victims.
According to the source, in Russia Matveev has been charged under Part 1 of Article 273 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – creating a computer program knowingly intended for unauthorized destruction, blocking, modification, copying of computer information or neutralization of computer information security measures.
