Variable State studio has published the debut gameplay trailer for Deepest Fear, a sci-fi horror shooter with a retrofuturism aesthetic. When describing their project, the developers mention many genres: metroidvania, horror, action and even immersive sim.
The main character of Deepest Fear, Dr. Danny Carroll, decided to get to the bottom of a secret project that was once led by her father. Players will have to help the girl reveal “deeply personal secrets with terrifying consequences”.
The exploration of locations here is diluted with battles with otherworldly entities that can spontaneously appear from literally any wet surface. Deepest Fear will receive an advanced fluid simulation system that can have a direct impact on gameplay.
Even throughout the short trailer, the ubiquitous water manages to change its behavior several times: in one fragment it simply foams under the heroine’s feet, a little later powerful flows knock the doctor off his feet, and then the protagonist uses the electrical conductivity of water for her benefit.
The authors of Deepest Fear claim that when creating the game they were inspired by the cult films “The Abyss”, “The Thing”, and “Total Recall”. The works of director James Cameron were mentioned separately. Among the games that Variable State was most influenced by were Metroid Prime, Half-Life 2, System Shock 2 and Dead Space.
Deepest Fear will be released on PC (Steam), the release date has not yet been announced. On the game page in the Valve service there is information about text translation into Russian.
