The Google Play platform will block payments in paid applications from developers from Russia. This means that users of such software products will not be able to make in-game purchases or update subscriptions. The changes will take effect on December 26, 2024.
The notice that Google began sending out to developers states that “for an indefinite period” payments for applications to developers who have an account registered with a Russian bank indicated for crediting payments are suspended. “This means that, starting December 26, 2024, we will reject all attempts by users to purchase your paid subscriptions, make in-app purchases (including new subscriptions), and renew subscriptions through Google Play.”the company said in a statement. It also says that this change will go into effect at 00:00 on December 26 (Pacific Time), and developers will receive final payments until January 15.
Let us recall that in May 2022, Google prohibited developers from Russia from downloading and updating paid applications on Google Play. This meant that the Russian segment of Google’s digital content store would not host paid applications, which meant that developers would not be able to monetize their products. In March of the same year, Google turned off advertising for Russian users, and later blocked the ability to monetize views on YouTube. This summer, the AdSense advertising service completely ceased its activities in Russia and deactivated user accounts, which led to a complete blocking of the ability to monetize the content of Russian bloggers.
