Roskomnadzor (RKN) has limited access to the popular Viber messenger in Russia, explaining its decision by the platform’s violation of the requirements of Russian legislation for organizers of information dissemination. “Access to the Viber service is limited due to a violation of the requirements of Russian legislation for organizers of the dissemination of information, the implementation of which is necessary to prevent threats of using the messenger for terrorist and extremist purposes, recruiting citizens to commit them, selling drugs, as well as in connection with the posting of illegal information.”— reported in the regulator’s Telegram channel.
In June 2023, the Tagansky District Court of Moscow imposed an administrative fine of 1 million rubles on the administration of the Viber messenger. due to refusal to remove false information. As Kommersant reports, the company then announced the lack of technical capabilities to delete communities.
After this, in March of this year, the court issued another fine to the messenger in the amount of 800 thousand rubles. for refusal to delete information prohibited by Russian law.
