Mafia: The Old Country from Hangar 13 is planned to be released in the summer of 2025 on Xbox Series X | S, Playstation 5 and PC. The events of the project will unfold in Sicily in the 1900s and will tell players about the early stages of the formation of a criminal gang. The chosen setting allowed the developers to implement in the game something that was not available in other parts of Mafia. These include horses, knife duels and antique vehicles.
Hangar 13 switched to the Unreal Engine 5 when developing Mafia: The Old Country. In an interview with Xbox Wire, they explained why the choice fell on the development of Epic Games:
We moved to Unreal Engine 5 to develop Mafia: The Old Country, allowing us to achieve an even higher level of visual fidelity than previous Mafia games. The environments and characters are more realistic and believable than ever before. We go to great lengths to make our story immersive, whether that means seamless transitions to cinematography or allowing the player to explore highly detailed narrative scenes during gameplay.
The team’s first priority when developing Mafia: The Old Country was to make players feel like Sicily was a central “character” in the story. Working in Unreal Engine 5, we were able to make Sicily more visually impressive than the locations we had previously created.
At the moment, the full gameplay of Mafia: The Old Country has not been shown, but the first trailer has been presented.
