Following the premiere at The Game Awards 2024, developers from the Hangar 13 studio shared new details of the crime action film Mafia: The Old Country with journalists from IGN and Video Games Chronicle.
Head of development Alex Cox and Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes refused to classify Mafia: The Old Country as an open-world game: fans can expect a linear adventure closer to Mafia 2 than Mafia 3.
According to Cox, players will be able to move around the world on foot, by car and on horseback, but the Sicilian countryside cannot boast of side activities. The developers urge not to compare the project with GTA VI.
Returning to the roots of the series in Mafia: The Old Country, says Baines, serves three purposes:
- talks about the origins of the real mafia;
- tells a new story in the Mafia universe;
- is a great starting point for players new to the franchise.
One of the reasons why the developers turned to the setting chosen for Mafia: The Old Country was the change of engine: instead of an internal solution, the team adopted Unreal Engine 5.
Let us remind you that the events will unfold in Sicily at the beginning of the 20th century. The anti-hero of this crime drama is poor miner and orphan Enzo Favara, who, ironically, gets the chance to join the mafia family of Don Torrisi.
The release of Mafia: The Old Country is expected in the summer of 2025 on PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series X and S. They promise a cinematic narrative, an authentic world and a full translation into Russian.
