During 11 months of this year, AI services were mentioned in Russian media 163,763 times, 1.03 million times in Russian-language Telegram channels and 20.17 million times in search queries, Vedomosti reported with reference to the joint Index report AI-Hype” from the Real Time agency and the Telegram channel “Non-digital economy”.
For comparison, over the entire past year, AI was mentioned in Russian media 139,916 times, in Telegram channels – 603,815 times, and users searched for information about AI services 19.1 million times. The study used statistics on 20 services, including foreign (ChatGPT, Midjourney, Character.AI, Suno, etc.) and Russian (YandexGPT and Shedevroom from Yandex and GigaChat and Kandinsky from Sber).
Due to the emergence of many new AI-powered services, the combined share of mentions of ChatGPT and Midjourney in media publications has dropped over the past two years to about 60% of the total, although Telegram never fell below 80%, the study reports. During this period, traditional media mentioned domestic AI services twice as often as users, who mentioned them twice as often as bloggers.
Since the spring of 2023, Russian AI has been mentioned on average in every fourth publication, and the share of media publications mentioning it has dropped below 20% only once. The peak of media interest in this topic occurred in December 2023, when Russian AI solutions were mentioned in almost half of the publications (40% of articles). At the same time, in 2024, GigaChat was mentioned more often in the media (at least 1,000 mentions monthly), and YandexGPT was mentioned in Telegram (at least 1,500 mentions monthly since March).
The study noted that the share of mentions of Russian products in Telegram posts in 2024 decreased. Of the domestic AI products, bloggers, as last year, most often mentioned YandexGPT. Its share in mentions was 1.8%, GigaChat, which displaced Kandinsky from second place, accounts for 1.6%.
As in 2023, in 2024 Russian users most often searched for products from Yandex on the Internet: Masterpiece (5.7%, in 2023 – 3.2%) and YandexGPT (2.9%, in 2023 year – 2.1%).
Interest in AI products this year was at a consistently high level, which was facilitated not only by the release of updates to previously released AI solutions, but also by the emergence of AI services that generate audio and video. In February, OpenAI introduced the Sora video generator, then its analogs were announced – Kling from the Chinese developer of the short video platform Kuaishou, as well as Luma and Runway from American developers.
The leader of user preferences since March 2023 remains the Character.AI service, which allows you to create AI personalities (did not fall below 400 thousand requests monthly) and displaced ChatGPT to second place, and the free service Stable Diffusion displaced Midjourney, which dropped to fourth, from third place.
Also in 2024, success accompanied the Suno AI service, which appeared in the fall of 2023, generating songs based on text descriptions. In June, it came in second place in search queries in Russia, ahead of ChatGPT.
In September, against the backdrop of the start of the school season, search queries mentioning ChatGPT began to increase, and in November the service came out on top (more than 500 thousand queries monthly), displacing Character.AI to second, and the image generation service “Masterpiece” came in third for the first time. from Yandex (more than 200 thousand requests monthly).
The co-founder of Parodist AI, Vladimir Sveshnikov, connects the decline in interest in Character AI with the suicide of a 14-year-old schoolboy in the United States that occurred in October, committed during a long conversation with a bot, after which the service tightened the moderation of the content it produces.
Dbrain CEO, author of the AI Happens Telegram channel Alexey Khakhunov, named ChatGPT and Midjourney as the absolute leaders in popularity, also recognizing the growing interest in Character.AI and Suno. He also noted that Yandex and Sber products are still performing worse than their Western counterparts in solving applied problems.
The expert said that now Yandex and Sber are more actively integrating their AI services into the infrastructure – into the help desk, into speakers, etc. At the same time, Yandex has advanced further than Sber in the development of AI models.
A representative of the Alliance in the field of artificial intelligence noted that this year was the year of introducing proprietary and open source models into products and services with an audience of millions. According to him, in 2025 we should expect an increase in the implementation of AI technology both in internal business processes and in external solutions. Moreover, one of the key trends in the development of neural networks in the next couple of years will be the additional training of open source models for implementation in business processes in various industries.
