The year 2025 has begun, and this is the 12th year for the basic Xbox One game console. There are still a lot of new games coming out on it, and many players continue to use the 2013 console for their favorite projects, not wanting to upgrade to the Xbox Series X | S.
It is currently unknown how many players use Xbox One consoles, and how many of them are willing to buy new games. Indie developer HappyPlayer asked whether resources should be spent on optimizing the game for Xbox One in 2025. He wrote the following on his social networks:
I want to know how many players are still using Xbox One? We’re developing the Xbox version of Idle Devils, but we’re running into an issue on Xbox One due to slow loading performance. I don’t know if Xbox One needs to be supported at this time. Xbox Series X | S is much easier to maintain.
The developer went on to explain why he couldn’t release the game on Xbox One in its current form. As it turns out, Microsoft prohibits releasing projects if they take more than 20 seconds to load:
To be honest, loading times on Xbox One are faster than those on Switch. But the Xbox testing team requires loading times to be less than 20 seconds. This condition is met on our dev kits, but we don’t know why it is not met on the test team’s dev kits.
On Reddit, players are divided on the need for Xbox One support in 2025. Some players believe that Microsoft has given a cheap entry into the next generation (Xbox Series S), so developers should be less aggressive in releasing their games on Xbox One and encourage users to migrate to more modern hardware. Others note that all the games that interest them (Fortnite, EA Sports FC, Call of Duty) are released/supported on the Xbox One generation, so they do not plan to update yet.
