Windows 10 has submitted 2.4 percentage points to market share in recent months. This largely benefits the growth of Windows 11.
The market share of Windows 10 fell by 2.4 percentage points to 60.3%in the period from December 2024 to January 2025. In the same period, the market share of Windows 11 reached a record high of 36.65% after a growth of 2.53 percentage points, according to Statcounter. It is remarkable that many PCs are still running on Windows 7: Statcounter reports a market share of 2.41%. Windows 8 and 8.1, the support of which was stopped simultaneously, do not reach there, with 0.18% and 0.3% respectively.
It is not very surprising that so many people from Windows 10 switch. After 14 October 2025 Microsoft stops the rollout of security patches for Windows 10 PCs. Consumers can enjoy security updates for a little longer via the extended security subscriptions, although this costs 30 dollars a year. For companies and educational institutions, however, the price tag is a lot higher: three years extra security updates costs them $ 427 per computer.
22 percentage point dropped
Both consumers and companies have an interest in purchasing new computers. That consumers dare to make the switch has been visible in the statistics for some time. Windows 10 has been losing steadily market share since January 2022: Windows 10 turned at the highlight according to Statcounter at 82.49% of all Windows PCs. The market share is now more than 22 percentage points lower.
A comment must be made with the figures from the research agency. Web data are analyzed for the figures. If computers are not used temporarily, this leads to a miniscule decrease in the market share. Around the holidays, which fall exactly in the filtered period, it may well be that more people have not used their old Windows PCs. At the same time, it is possible that more consumers have just bought or received a new PC during the holidays, or have upgraded their current PC.
TPM ease
So take the figures with a grain of salt, although a deviation of more than 2 percentage points does indicate a change. We expect that this decrease will continue in the coming months. What makes this difficult is that Microsoft takes away possibilities to install Windows 11 on non-supported PCs. To upgrade, people have to choose a new PC. Microsoft partners AMD and Intel also encourage this: because there are many new AI functions to explore, but of course Finance also plays a role.
For PCs that do meet the requirements, there is still good news: they can be updated directly to Windows 11 24H2. Users must perform the update manually, although Microsoft says they also point out the fact that the upgrade is ready for them.
