Apple’s partnership with Alibaba became known as early as February last year, when Tsai Chongxin, chairman of the Chinese holding company’s board of directors, talked about the collaboration during a speech at the Dubai Summit. Last month, Chinese regulators allowed Apple to operate in the country’s market for artificial intelligence systems, a unique precedent for approving such activity by a foreign company. In addition to integrating with Alibaba’s Qwen AI model, Apple also offers its Chinese customers an adaptation of rival Baidu’s technology. At the same time, Reuters emphasized that Apple was directly involved in training artificial intelligence models for the Chinese market, although Chinese partners were also involved. In Western markets, it has so far preferred to sign agreements with off-the-shelf AI model providers. Apple will become the first foreign company allowed by Chinese authorities to release a proprietary artificial intelligence model in the local market.
