As the operator of the national top-level domain name, the Internet Technology Center implemented Supports email addresses entirely in Russian.
Previously, the registration system only accepted contact addresses in a mixed format: Latin before the “@” sign and Cyrillic after (for example, info@3dnews.rf). Thanks to the update, users can now specify their email without using Latin characters: for example, info@3daynews.rf. The possibility of creating such addresses became possible thanks to the EAI standard and the SMTPUTF8 extension, which was adopted in 2012 for handling characters from the national alphabet in the local part of the address. Prior to this, the IDNA standard was launched in 2003. However, the infrastructure in the Cyrillic region only partially supported this technology for a long time.
