Government agencies of the People’s Republic of China were ordered to stop using Microsoft’s Windows 10 adapted version early.

Microsoft’s influence in the Chinese market has been declining for about ten consecutive years. Both sides have made moves in this area, and now Bloomberg reports on a new directive from Chinese authorities, according to which government agencies must quickly move away from previously installed versions of Windows 10 to accommodate such customers.

According to reports, the Ministry of State Security of the People’s Republic of China insists on this Bloomberg. This migration was stipulated in a previously agreed-upon plan, but in fact, the process of abandoning Windows 10 by Chinese government agencies has accelerated significantly. This version of the US operating system was developed for the Chinese market by the CMIT joint venture established in 2016 with Microsoft participation. It is expected that through the joint venture’s efforts, the Windows 10 operating system can comply with the security requirements of the Chinese authorities.

According to Bloomberg, the news caused Chinese software vendors to increase prices by 10% and sometimes as much as 20%. It was originally planned that CMIT would stop distributing and supporting the above versions of Windows 10 before February next year. Sources said the request from employees at many government agencies in China to speed up the transition to state software was surprising. A Microsoft representative only explained that this version of Windows 10 for the Chinese market continues to receive regular security updates and that the company is currently not aware of any information security incidents in this regard. Microsoft ended technical support for Windows 10 in most markets late last year.
