Phantom Blade Zero: An in-depth look at the weapons, game world, and difficulty levels

Development studio S-Game has released a ton of new information about the highly anticipated action role-playing game Phantom Blade Zero. The game takes players into a dark martial arts world where kung fu martial arts meets steampunk elements. In addition to providing insights into the dynamic combat system and world design, the creators also revealed extensive customization options. The announcement of the different difficulty levels is of particular interest, as the studio is bringing a very unique twist to the classic permadeath concept.

The highlight of the weapons arsenal is a total of 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary weapons. In addition to the classic swords and spears, unusual weapons such as iron fists, heavy hammers, and ranged weapons are also used. Anyone who tries out a weapon and subsequently wants to change their play style can take their upgrade resources back in full and reallocate them at any time.

The game world itself is neither a purely linear world nor a typical open world, but instead consists of eight seamlessly interlocking hand-drawn areas full of secrets and side quests.

In terms of demand, the game targets a very different type of player. Walker Mode is aimed at players looking for a relaxing, cinematic combat experience. Higher options like Pathbreaker require more precision. At Hellwalker’s extreme levels, enemy bosses will even instantly adapt to the player’s movements and continually punish reckless mistakes.

The highlight of the challenge is the so-called 66-day mode. This uses the Hellwalker difficulty, but ties it directly to the plot: during the game, the protagonist’s soul has exactly 66 days left to live. Each on-screen death deducts one of the remaining days from the hero. If the counter drops to zero, final permadeath takes effect and the round ends. As such, this system provides an exciting and narratively anchored alternative to the classic permadeath system.

Phantom Blade Zero will be released on PC and PlayStation 5 on October 29, 2026.
