As part of their ongoing film series, development studios Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog have announced more details about the action-adventure game Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Following previous in-depth looks at the puzzle mechanics and action systems, the latest preview highlights the confrontations with opponents and the development possibilities of protagonist Lara Croft. The reinterpretation of the classic series combines acrobatic roots with modern dynamics and introduces gameplay features such as slow-motion mechanics.
The centerpiece of the battle scene shown is the newly introduced focus bar. This resource builds up in the heat of battle as players deal damage, cleverly dodge enemy attacks, or get attacked. Once the display is filled, slow motion can be initiated. This effect allows Lara Croft to deliver precise strikes and perform acrobatic moves that are visually reminiscent of the heroine’s classic performances from the late 1990s.
In addition to her iconic twin pistols, Lara also has a variety of weapons at her disposal, including a submachine gun. As the development team emphasizes, ambitious players can complete the entire adventure using only the featured pistols if they wish. Combat dynamics are complemented by an extensive progression and upgrade system, whereby Lara Croft’s skills and equipment can be gradually expanded and strengthened over the course of the game.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to be released on February 12, 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The information presented clearly shows that the team is increasingly focusing on a successful balance between nostalgic elements and contemporary gameplay mechanics when modernizing classics.
