Android is about to implement 24-hour quarantine for unverified apps – and their installation will become more difficult

Google has begun rolling out a new mechanism for installing apps from unverified developers, which will complicate the installation of potentially dangerous programs, requiring users to perform additional steps and require a 24-hour wait.

The new mechanism, called Advanced Flow, will become mandatory for users who want to install apps from developers who are not registered on the Google Play app store. This was announced by Mishaal Rahman, the company’s manager of engagement with the Android community.

To start the advanced process, you need to turn on Developer Options, select the Unverified Developer Applications section, and verify via the lock screen that the user has voluntarily changed the settings.

Next, you need to restart your smartphone and wait for 24 hours. Then go back to settings and allow such apps to be installed for 7 days or indefinitely. However, when installing third-party applications, Android will still display a warning and ask users to agree to this operation.

as mentioned before Android Authoritythe 24-hour delay acts as a protective filter and interrupts the victim’s chain of action. Victims are often persuaded by scammers to “urgently” install malware. However, Google offers some exceptions: if you temporarily disable a feature, you’ll have a 10-minute grace period to return it without waiting again, and the ADB debugger is completely unaffected by the new restrictions. It is also clarified that the rule applies not only to initial installations, but also to updates of existing untested applications.

This innovation coincides with the launch of the new Android Developer Verifier system verification service, which can be manually installed from Google Play to speed up access to extended feature verification programs. Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand will begin mandatory developer verification on September 30. In the first phase, it will affect apps distributed through Google Play, Honor App Market, OPPO App Market, Galaxy Store, Palm Store, V-Appstore and GetApps. This feature will be available in all regions in 2027.
