Telegram has submitted an application for a new top-level domain name .gram to the international organization ICANN. According to Pavel Durov, the founder of the instant messaging software, this domain name will allow users to obtain their own domain name based on their own name, in the format: username.gram. They can also build a website on their own domain.

Telegram is no longer just a communication service for sending and receiving messages, but a full-fledged social network. Adding the ability to create websites will help increase the popularity of instant messaging software.
However, as the resource points out Android Authoritysubmitting an application does not guarantee that ICANN will accept the .gram domain and assign it to Telegram. Before a new top-level domain (TLD) can be accepted, a technical and financial assessment needs to be completed, followed by an objection review phase and other steps.
Telegram’s decision to obtain its own TLD may be related to the recent outage of links on the company’s t.me website. In July, Telegram short links were down for nearly a day because the domain registrar that controls the .me zone temporarily deactivated the Telegram domain.
If Telegram’s own .gram domain extension application is approved, the company will be able to better control the links generated by the app. Android Authority believes that for a service that often conflicts with governments around the world, having its own TLD can make a big difference.
