“Golden Ax” animated series will premiere in September: the first trailer reveals the comedy tone

Paramount+ has released the trailer and first images for the animated adaptation of the long-running SEGA series Golden Ax.

Remember the scrolling fighting game series (most of it) golden axborn out of SEGA’s historic coin operation released in 1989? Know it will come back in the form of animated TV series. The project, co-created by Mike McMahan (“Lower Decks”) and Joe Chandler (“American Dad”), will be reimagined as a metafictional comedy set in the sword-and-sorcery world.

The tone of the production is evident from the first sequence Demonstration trailerwhich you can find below. Before launching his attack, the warrior witch Tyrese Flair shouted the name “Sega” and then explained the dynamics of the show in a didactic manner, openly following the structure of video games: “We will do what we do best. We will face a series of enemies that become progressively more difficult until we have a great final battle with the Death Viper. And then we will kill him for good.”

The plot revolves around the reunion of the two Three original heroes from the arcade gameunite to defeat the seemingly unstoppable rival Death Viper. The voice cast includes Matthew Rhys as Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy and unhygienic fighting dwarf. Liam McIntyre stars as Ax Battler, a savage who adheres to a strict code of honor but is peaceful by nature; Lisa Gilroy voices the deadly Tyris Flare.

The dynamics of the group will change with the arrival of new members hampton squibvoiced by Danny Pudi. This is a new character described as a naive adventurer, completely unprepared but eager to join the mission. Comedian Carl Tate has also been confirmed, voicing the humanoid Black Panther Kronos “Evil” Wright. There are also skeleton swordsmen, bipedal war horses called “chicken legs”, and golden death armor.

“The Golden Ax” has had a long road to the small screen, with the first adaptation attempt dating back to 2014. After the 10-episode season originally slated to air on Comedy Central is greenlit in 2024, the show will officially premiere exclusively on the streaming platform Paramount+ Starting Wednesday, September 16th.
