Android 17-based Nothing OS 5.0 release is around the corner

The stable version of Google Android 17 is yet to gain significant traction in the market. It works on Pixel smartphones, the latest Samsung foldable phones, and the Motorola Edge 2025. There’s no promise to join their ranks – the company promises that Nothing OS 5.0 based on Android 17 will launch soon.

In a forum post, Nothing said the 5.0 update is “coming soon.” It also specified a specific date and time: Tuesday, August 25, 2026, 13:20 Moscow time, although it did not specify exactly what would happen on that day. At the end of July last year, Nothing OS 4.0 based on Android 16 began internal testing and began public testing a few months later; the stable version of Nothing OS 4.0 was only released in November. Given these deadlines, the most likely option is to release a preliminary version of Nothing OS 5.0 on August 25, rather than a stable version – perhaps with a public beta test.

Last week, the manufacturer began accepting applications from Nothing Phone 3 users to participate in testing a software product before its official release – perhaps Nothing OS 5.0. The company did not disclose further information and participants signed confidentiality agreements. There is not much information about Nothing OS 5.0. It’s based on Android 17, which includes an enhanced desktop interface with support for free-form windows, instant update notifications for current tasks, the ability to open apps in floating bubbles, and more.
