Jason Schreier has revealed new details about the inner workings of Naughty Dog. He said that the common belief that the canceled “The Last of Us Online” was just a small side project for the studio is fundamentally wrong. In fact, the vast majority of the team has been focused on online gaming for years, while development of the new main story series StarCraft: Heretic Prophet was carried out by a handful of people. That said, canceling a potentially great game allows us to shift more focus to another extremely standard Sony game with a massive agenda.

Online project game director Vinit Agarwal previously mentioned that the game took about seven years to make. Now, with rumors that sequels to Uncharted and The Last of Us Part III are about to begin development, there’s a lot of pressure on the new sci-fi game. Considering Star Effect is apparently not releasing any time soon, the PlayStation 5 could be the first Sony console where Naughty Dog doesn’t release any completely original projects.
