Anthropic hires Google chip design veteran

Having your own AI chips has become almost a requirement for the potential success of many startups in related fields, so market leaders are willing to attract professionals to their workforces. To do this, Anthropic hired Amir Salek, the founder of Google’s chip development project.

The agency reported the matter Bloomberg Quoting the statement from Anthropic itself. Until 2022, Salek led Alphabet’s tensor processing unit (TPU) business and was responsible for the creation of the first seven generations. In his new role, Salik will report to James Bradbury. So far, Anthropic’s computing infrastructure has mainly relied on chips from Nvidia, AWS (Amazon) and Alphabet (Google). Apparently, she selected her in-house chip design experts from this source.

As artificial intelligence booms, finding ways to optimize computing resources often becomes the main reason for creating their own chips, because companies understand the needs of their own architecture better than third-party developers, who often focus on the general stuff. In addition, competition is forcing AI startups to move in this direction. OpenAI recently launched its own Jalapeno chip, which was developed with help from Broadcom. In addition to established chip suppliers, Anthropic also works with startups. In particular, it ordered a batch of wafers worth about $250 million from the British company Fractile. It has also signed contracts with Riot Platforms and Volta Infra Holdings. Returning to Amir Salik, he has development experience in more than 25 chip designs at Nvidia. After leaving Google, he served as a senior director at Cerberus Capital Management, an investment company founded by US Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg.
