Afterworld: Paradox announced as a post-apocalyptic grand strategy game

The strategy experts at Paradox Interactive have now dedicated their latest game to the post-apocalypse, too. The classic grand strategy formula should now be transferred to this setting.

The post-apocalypse is a very popular setting in video games, although not necessarily strategy games. Paradox Interactive now wants to change that, announcing Afterworld, a massive strategy game with just such a scenario, at Gamescom. The news had leaked online ahead of the show, but now it’s official.

Afterworld is being developed by Paradox Development Studio, the team behind Crusader Kings III and Hearts of Iron IV, and is planned to come to PC “soon” – no further details about a release date were initially given. The setting is post-apocalyptic North America, characterized by impassable terrain, dangerous Old World ruins, and desperate survivors.

In the studio’s latest grand strategy game, you’ll not only face a variety of strategic challenges, but you’ll also have to overcome moral conflicts and accompany a handful of survivors to build a continent-spanning empire. “Escapees” venture out from a dilapidated nuclear bunker and must become familiar with the dusty landscape.

Your mission involves gathering food, water, and fuel, where the terrain and resources should be geographically identifiable and assignable to North America. The procedurally generated world is designed to ensure a high level of replayability. You can also find and explore lost technologies, unlock advanced technologies, and more.
