The first preview of GTA VI has been released, revealing new gameplay mechanics

Before publishing grand theft auto 6 With time left dwindling, Rockstar Games continues to gradually reveal details of its most ambitious project yet. This time, large-scale materials for future games appeared in the magazine at a loss – The publication had the opportunity to speak with key Rockstar employees and discuss in detail how the developer sees the new Vice City, its main characters, and the open world concept.

Judging from the previews that have been released, Rockstar intends for GTA 6 to be more than just a prettier version of its predecessor, but one that goes deeper into developing almost every system that creates the feel of a living world. At the same time, the developers are clearly trying to find a balance between the series’ usual craziness and the realism the series is particularly famous for. Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar wants to make the world of GTA 6 as vibrant as possible

One of the main ideas of the new section is that the world around you is more reactive. In previous games in the series, players could turn streets into battlefields with near-impunity without having to think too much about how strange their actions might look to others.

In GTA 6, that should change. If Jason or Lucia walked out with a rifle in hand, those around them wouldn’t act as if nothing unusual was going on. The player’s actions should affect NPC reactions, and the world itself should react more naturally to the protagonist’s actions.

Rockstar has made it clear that it wants to create an environment that is constantly responsive to what’s going on. At the same time, the developers admit that such a concept may elicit mixed reactions: the more realistic the world becomes, the less of the classic chaos of GTA.

According to the development manager northern rock star Rob Nelson leads the team in constantly analyzing previous projects and looking for opportunities to improve elements that were previously limited by technology, resources, or simply not well thought out. Therefore, many of GTA 6’s mechanics are the result of the gradual evolution of existing systems.

Jason and Lucia will become a real couple, not just two heroes

The new material specifically focuses on the relationship between Jason Duvall and Lucia Caminos. For the first time in the series’ history, Rockstar is making the two protagonists a full-fledged playable couple.

Jason is described as a former soldier and drug courier, while Lucia was recently released from prison. They are united by their criminal activities, but the relationships between the characters will play a more important role than just a means to connect the two storylines.

Even during normal travel, players can switch heroes freely. For example, Jason might be driving while Lucia is sitting next to her and using her phone. The game will feature social networks that will become part of the world around us, while allowing Rockstar to poke fun at the realities of modern America.

This will be the most fun during the chase. If the heroes get caught in a firefight, players can drive as Jason, then switch to Lucia and fire at their pursuers from the passenger window.

After completing their next criminal adventure, no one forces the heroes to immediately perform the next mission. They can simply go jet skiing, admire the Leonidas coastline and watch dolphins.

It’s this combination of criminal history and everyday life that should be one of GTA 6’s distinguishing features.

Rockstar bets on relationships

In previous Grand Theft Auto games, romance tended to remain a secondary component, with romance and sex often being associated with strip clubs and other traditional series elements.

In GTA 6, the approach has changed significantly. Rockstar writers directly call Jason and Lucia’s story a version “Bonnie and Clyde” – Criminals are connected not only by common actions but also by real feelings.

The trailer has shown many intimate scenes between characters, and Rockstar pays great attention to the physical interaction between characters. Developers want touches, body movements and facial expressions to look as natural as possible.

At the same time, the relationship between Jason and Lucia won’t just exist for the sake of good scenes. Rockstar stresses that players won’t be getting two faceless avatars to use at their disposal. The heroes all have their own personalities, personalities, and histories, and the player must go through this journey with them.

Lucia will become GTA’s first mature female protagonist

Lucia’s appearance has another huge significance for the series. She will be the first fully-fledged female protagonist in the mainline Grand Theft Auto franchise in years.

The first “Grand Theft Auto” in 1997 featured both male and female characters, before the series switched to almost exclusively male protagonists. even in grand theft auto 5Rockstar introduced three main characters simultaneously, and none of them were female. Now things will change.

The developers hope that Lucia and her story will give us a new look at the usual GTA formula, and that the game itself will appeal to a wider audience. At the same time, Rockstar didn’t want Lucia to be a simple replacement for the usual male characters—she had to have her own motivations, personality, and relationships with others.

Appearance changing mechanics will return to GTA 6

One of the most interesting details in the preview is the information that Rockstar’s usual character physics change system will be further developed.

Diet will affect Jason and Lucia’s weight, and exercise will make them more muscular. Additionally, these changes should be visually obvious.

However, it’s not just food and exercise that affect a hero’s appearance. If the character is away from home for long periods of time, constantly hiding from the police, or spends too much time in the nightlife, this will also affect his appearance.

In other words, the player’s habits will be literally written on the character. This is reminiscent of the approach Rockstar already took with Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur Morgan’s character gradually changed based on the player’s actions. In GTA 6, such systems should become more prominent and closely tied to the overall concept of the living world.

Rockstar spent years researching the real Florida

To create a convincing version of Florida, Rockstar didn’t limit itself to studying photos and documentation.

Over the years, developers have traveled to Miami and other parts of the state, and Rockstar has an independent research team dedicated to studying the area.

Staff met with ex-offenders, law enforcement officials, club promoters, gun dealers and others with knowledge of the local area. The information obtained is then compared with books, news materials, and other sources.

This should allow Rockstar to move away from the simple cartoonish stereotype of Florida. Yes, players may encounter familiar “Floridian” characters, but the developers want Leonidas to be seen not as a set of internet memes, but as an independent place with its own culture, social groups and way of life.

The game will have a large number of characters

The city and its surrounding areas are inhabited by a variety of people. GTA 6’s characters will include drug dealers, bank robbers, underworld representatives, club owners and musicians.

Characters already revealed include aging drug courier Brian Hyde, his conspiracy theory-obsessed partner Carl Hampton, career thief Raul Batista and Vice City legend Bobby Ike.

The latter runs his own criminal and entertainment empire, including a Jack of Hearts strip club and a music studio run by the young and ambitious Dre’Quan Priest.

The musical component will also become an important part of the world. Rockstar examines the development of Miami hip-hop, from Miami Bass to contemporary artists. The game will feature multiple characters through which players will be able to become familiar with different aspects of local music culture.

Even clothes should tell a story

Rockstar paid special attention to the clothing and appearance of the residents of Leonidas. The developers are creating a “fashion ecosystem” in which clothing depends on the character’s region, income, lifestyle and cultural milieu.

In Vice City, players will see people wearing expensive designer clothes, tourists, representatives of various subcultures, and residents of ethnic areas. Elsewhere in Leonidas, the appearance of the crowds will be completely different – for example, in rural areas and national parks, characters will wear practical clothing appropriate to the environment.

And we’re not just talking about the number of clothing styles. Rockstar wants the NPC bodies themselves to be diverse: characters will vary in height, shape, age, tattoos, piercings and other features.

The developers claim to have created new tools and production processes to achieve the most diverse population in the series’ history.

Rockstar team grows significantly

Creating such a detailed world required a massively expanded team.

Since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar has more than doubled the number of employees working on such projects. The company has branches in different countries, with a separate office in Los Angeles dedicated almost exclusively to the creation of pedestrians and other NPCs.

Rockstar recruited more than 50 real-life street artists to design the graffiti. Their pieces will decorate various areas of Sin City, including the Stockyards, inspired by Miami’s famous Wynwood district.

The car’s design approach also looks unusual: people with real-world experience in professional racing are working on the transport control system.

GTA 6 attempts to combine the madness of GTA with the realism of Red Dead Redemption 2

As a result, a rather interesting picture emerged. On the one hand, GTA 6 retains everything fans have come to expect from the series: cars, weapons, crime, chases, a huge open world, clubs and the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in a life of crime.

On the other hand, Rockstar clearly hopes to bring the game closer to the level of system detail of “Red Dead Redemption 2”. The world should react to player actions, characters’ bodies should change, NPCs should have more varied behaviors, and environments should feel less like decoration and more like a full-fledged system.

This is where the main question for GTA 6 might arise: will the game become so realistic that it loses some of the crazy spirit of the previous installments?

Rockstar seems confident it can avoid this problem. The studio wanted to give players the widest possible opportunities for self-expression, but at the same time preserve the characters of Jason and Lucia and the inner logic of the world.

After thirteen years of waiting, the stakes are very high indeed. Rockstar itself acknowledges the intense pressure, but sees it more as a privilege: The team knows they’re creating a game that audiences will likely spend years playing with.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. The new Dazed material only reinforces the feeling that Rockstar is preparing not just another GTA, but a massive attempt to rethink the concept of a living open world.
