In March of this year, The Long Dark had its final episode, released nine years after the project was originally launched. But then the developers pointed out that the development of the game did not end there. Now they have shared their recent plans and also talked about the theme of the sequel “Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2”.

According to a Hinterland representative, development of the original The Long Dark will continue. Even though the main storyline is complete, they still plan to release 2 more add-ons for the project. Their content has yet to be revealed, but the developers promise to expand the adventure in “unexpected ways.” Details are planned to be announced in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The development of “Survival” mode will also continue. It will add areas from the final episode of the story campaign, among other things. According to the developers, further development of the first part will focus on this mode.

As for Dark Frost, the sequel is being produced by a separate team. The developers plan to hold the first full gameplay reveal before the end of 2026, after which they will start talking regularly about the status of the project. Early access was originally planned to launch in 2026, but was later postponed to 2027.

Separately, the developers of “The Long Dark” stated in a statement that they are considering stopping support for the game on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Switch, as 85% of console players no longer use these platforms. No final decision has been made.
