Microsoft has launched Project Zenith, a special Windows configuration of powerful computers aimed at software developers. Such PCs will have impressive technical specifications, a wide range of work tools and properly configured Windows.

“Project Zenith devices come pre-configured with Windows for development and a set of tools targeted at developers first. On these devices, developers can run models with more than 30 billion parameters locally and without restrictions, accelerating experimentation and reducing reliance on token restrictions in the cloud.” — Tell Logan Iyer, Vice President of Platform and Windows Development at Microsoft.
AMD showed off the first Project Zenith device at IFA 2026 – a micro PC based on Ryzen AI Halo. In the coming months, other machines will appear, including ones using other processors. Project Zenith devices must have at least 64 GB of unified memory and a bandwidth of at least 250 GB/s, which will also allow sizable AI models to be launched locally.
The computers come pre-installed with Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI and Windows Dev Skills. Explorer is configured to show file extensions and hidden files, as well as full paths in the title bar; display of recently used files and folders and sync service prompts are disabled; long path support is enabled. Start menu prompts and account notifications are also disabled, and the PowerToys command panel is enabled by default.
Some of these changes may also be useful to regular users who are traditionally unhappy with distracting interface elements. “Project Zenith is the result of listening to developers about what they want from Windows now and where they want the platform to go.
