Masahiro Ito admits making Pyramid Head for Silent Hill 2 took away from his personal life

Masahiro Ito, art director and iconic monster designer for legendary team Silent, took to social media to share his candid thoughts on the price of creative success. The artist noted that his life would have been much happier if he hadn’t sacrificed his romantic relationships in the early 2000s for his cult work on Silent Hill 2 and the image of Pyramid Head.

While developing Silent Hill 2 for the PlayStation 2, Ito went to great lengths to immerse himself in the city’s creature design and dark aesthetic. During this time, he stopped dating and gave up on his personal life to devote himself to the project. The artist admitted in a reply to a fan on social network X:

If I had continued to date and marry her, I would have probably lived a happier life, even if Pyramid Head had never been born.

While the image of the monster with a triangular guillotine on its head has become a global phenomenon and an icon of the psychological horror genre, the author himself has repeatedly expressed mixed feelings about its unbridled popularity in countless spin-offs and films.
